About the Wine
Hampshire Lambrusco? No, not something we thought we'd find ourselves writing either - but here we are! This is an English sparkling red made with Triomphe and Bacchus (a white grape, providing lift both in colour and aromatically) that grow well over the clay soils of our cooler home shores.
It combines two vintages, some barrel-aged Triomphe from 2021 was blended with the fresh juice of 2022 to kick off fermentation, then bottled to complete its fermentation, trapping the bubbles. Offbeat embrace the experimental, so there is little to compare this too, but keep the Lambrusco reference in mind - it has that tart, freshly-picked bramble berry feel, with keen acids, so one could enjoy it in much the same way. Fascinating developments, as always from this envelope-pushing English producer.
About Offbeat
Offbeat Wines was born in 2018 as a creative outlet for Daniel whilst he was heading up the winemaking at Langham Wine Estate in Dorset, but it has since grown into a full-time family operation. Since 2020, Daniel and his wife Nicola (both formally marine biologists) have been making wines in their own cellar, a converted barn at Botley’s Farm, just outside Salisbury.
Dan & Nicola have developed close relationships with responsible, passionate growers in the South West, and their wines for the foreseeable future will be focused on celebrating the quality of fruit from two farms in particular. They work with Duncan McNeill, who farms an organic vineyard in Crouch Valley and Lucie and Jules in Kent who are farming biodynamically.
Nicola and Daniel work as naturally as possible, ferments are wild, and production is tiny with only around 2,000 bottles of each cuvée made. The project is another shining example of showing the potential of English natural wines. The project going from strength to strength, we look forward to seeing what happens next.
