About the Wine

A pale shade of gold in the glass, this is whistle clean and wonderfully savoury, with southern notes of citrus, salt and almond. A wine of real energy, it offers an almost literal translation of the karst terrain of Gioia with citrus, wildflowers, sea salt and chalky minerals. Made with Trebbiano from old vines planted over the limestone of the Murge Plateau. The grapes were pressed directly to a mix of vats and sandstone amphorae, before being bottled the following spring.

The 2023 vintage was a challenging year for Cristiano, which unfortunately saw him lose almost half his grapes. As a result, he harvested grapes from another grower in the village who farms organically, making for a new look for this iconic cuvée. The wine shows deep savouriness and generosity of fruit, making it very much suited to the cooler days and nights that lay ahead.

About Cristiano Guttarolo

Cristiano Guttarolo’s vineyards are away the plains which often produce hot, flabby wines, on a plateau of limestone some 400 metres above sea level, they benefit from the unique climate in which they live. Daytime temperatures are cooler than usual thanks to a strong breeze from the sea, while the site’s elevation offers a fluctuation between day and night temperatures, allowing the grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness and finesse. While the wines are unmistakably Pugliese, full of wild, sun-drenched fruit, they have a balance often missing around here, one that allows the grape and place to sing and the drinker to enjoy the beautiful minerality that karst soils bring. Vineyard work is excellent, organic and done entirely by hand, while in the cellar Cristiano eschews the use of additives entirely as these are the sort of wines he likes to drink.
