Toranja, ‘grapefruit’ in Portuguese, is a direct press of Grenache Gris and Macabeo from a parcel planted over pure schist. A wine of real refreshment and minerality, a little reduced on opening, it carries a gentle spritz alongside a combination of minerals, lemons, sea salt and of course- grapefruit! The perfect way to start a meal, the wine has an almost tonic-like quality that makes it incredibly palate cleansing and easy to drink.
Tutti Frutti Ananas is the project of Manuel of Vinyer de la Ruca, teaming up with some friends to make the kind of laid back, easygoing wines they enjoy drinking by the seaside in Banyuls-sur-Mer.
They farm organically over a combination of sand, schist and quartz from vineyards both close to the sea and up in the mountains which loom above. They make the wines together in Les 9 Caves, a cooperative cellar they share in an old garage in the town’s centre. The wines ferment and age in large concrete vats and are bottled young, brimming with life.
Under their own labels, each farm old bush vines planted on steep slopes over pure schist. In this arid climate, yields are painfully low and the resulting wines are powerful and intense, often requiring careful ageing to show their true pedigree. The idea here is to do something a little different, these are wines to be enjoyed young and with gusto and as the name suggests the wines are fruity, vibrant and offer great value. Most importantly, they are incredibly delicious.
