Exotic fruit, zesty lemons and grapefruit. It’s hard to drink Zegwur without comparing it to some sort of Rubicon and Lilt mash-up. Made from Gewürztraminer grown on granitic soils, 25% of the grapes are macerated for 3 weeks, while the other 75% go through a long, slow press. The resulting wine falls somewhere in-between the orange and white wine world. Zesty and tropical fruits are complimented by a floral freshness lingering in the background, a crisp line of acidity keeps those classic floral aromas in check. Fruit and freshness are really on show here, glowing in the glass waiting to be drunk with ease.
The Durrmann family had made wine for generations as small farmers. Grandad had moved away from farming to become a shoemaker but still kept a few vines on the side. André decided to move back to farming in 1979 and pieced the domaine together from abandoned vineyard sites that were hard to work and no longer commercially viable. Son Yann has worked in the domaine since he was a child and officially took over the business a year ago. André was among the first wave of organic winemakers in Alsace, converting in 1998. Yann has taken this a step further applying a more natural approach in the cellar.
