Thierry’s iconic Pineau d’Aunis is borne from a 130 vineyard planted on original roots over sand, silex and iron in the Sarthe. The grapes were destemmed and the wine fermented on the skins for five weeks, before being aged in old barrels for fifteen months. Displaying impeccable balance and poise, this rivals the greatest expressions of the grape, with fine tannins framing red fruit, minerals and the variety’s signature spice.
Originally from Touraine, Thierry comes from a family of growers and grew up among the vines. He travelled the world spending time in vineyards before returning to the Loire and working alongside the likes of Eric Nicolas and Jean-Pierre Robinot. He spent several years acquiring tiny parcels of the oldest vines he could find and in 2009 began making wine.
Thierry now farms just two and a half hectares of old vines spread out in tiny parcels across the Sarthe and further afield in Touraine. He farms with the utmost respect for nature and keeps treatments to an absolute minimum- using intuition and a deft hand to make beautiful wines that channel the energy of these remarkable old vines..
The cellar is set in a small cave, which provides the perfect conditions for élevage. Amazingly, he still makes wine without the aid of running water or electricity- this is wine made as it would have been in yesteryear. These are wines of incredible purity, wines that will reward patient drinkers for years to come.
