Serious is perhaps the wrong word, but this is so very much a Rhone Syrah in its blackcurrant fruit, olive and peppercorn character that both leaps from the glass and explodes on the palate. Fred's entry-point cuvée, blending a roughly even split of almost every grape grown in the domaine, red and white, brought together in a direct-press. A 15-day maceration of Roussanne blended with a direct-press of Vermentino and Grenache Blanc. In a lightly oxidative style, the wine was assembled into 600 litre demi-muid barrels for 6 months with no topping up. The most boldly-structured of the Grange du Nord wines, Mitan introduces a wild-edged nose of Carignan to the Grenache and Cinsault, and brings a lightly vegetal, stemmy character from the whole bunches. A wine that starts to move into the more structured, gastronomic realms, Gare du Nord once again uses the infusion technique but with a little more extraction, giving intensity and tannins that edge to the foreground.
