Given time to open up, a nuanced meld of gently honeyed crisp green apple, lemon sorbet and matchstick reduction float from the glass. Less high-definition-angular than his longer-lived wines, again there is an appealing softness to the structure, with everything hanging in place with casual poise. A callback to the old school Marsala of days gone by and a remarkable, completely natural phenomenon. Bone dry, the wine is a heady mix of all the complex flavours and textures that oxidation and flor-contact can bring. This is resolutely a red wine, despite 50% of the grapes being white, such is the influence of the Syrah. The Chardonnay and Viognier keep things delightfully silky and fluid, but the red grape provides a huge aromatic lift, that somehow seems to carry itself through into the palate, which is dense with dark blackcurrant fruits and juicy, saline black olive.
