New drops from Mataburro and L’Absurde Génie Des Fleurs
From the scorching heat in the South of France come four beautifully pure fruited, fragrant wines that defy the heat from which they come. Here we have two producers who use intuition and a deft touch to produce wines that bounce with freshness, fruit and fluidity. From Mataburro (Perpignan, Roussillon) and L’Absurde Génie Des Fleurs (Hérault, Languedoc) come energy charged wines which are worlds apart from the brash, blockbuster style wines associated with the region.
From Laurent and Melissa of Mataburro we have a new (and possibly one-off) négoce cuvee, Quartet Blanc 2024, a pithy, tense, textured orange wine of Viognier & Grenache Gris, made using grapes purchased from friends just a stone’s throw away. And Idoine 2024, a bright, crunchy Merlot showing vibrant dark cherries and perfume which sit alongside the finest of tannins.
From Tom and Miha of L’Absurde Génie Des Fleurs we have two bright, fruit filled chillable reds. Curcubeu 2023, a huge field blend from a single plot of old vines, showing all things fresh raspberry and red cherries sitting alongside a deep mineral imprint. And Ploum 2023, a pure, fruit-forward Cinsault giving an ultimate red-fruit bomb, a delicious bouncing ball of a wine that sits somewhere in-between the dark rosé and red wine world.
