The latest from Martin Hirsch

After an encouraging response first time around, we’re so pleased to release the latest vintages from Franconian wunderkind, Martin Hirsch. Working out of his father’s old cellar in this respected, though by and large lesser-sung region in the south of Germany, he operates outside the strict Prädikat system, declassifying his output to the table wine designation of ‘Landwein’, somewhat stacking the odds against him in the old-guard domestic market in the process.

While it’s widely accepted that French wines under the equivalent Vin de France can be truly remarkable expressions of a grower’s intent, Landwein still isn’t perceived in quite the same way by the majority of German drinkers. But as we all know, this freedom allows a grower to work entirely on their own terms - and Martin very much does, producing intuitive, distinctive wines shaped by those that inspired him from his home country and beyond. Some are his take on the precision, terroir-driven Silvaner of the region, others move beyond clear reference points. In short, they are some of the most engaging, quality Landwein we’ve come across. All from vines farmed organically, in some cases with a completely hands-off approach, and with zero inputs in the cellar.

From bracing, featherweight Dornfelder and Domina reds, through sunset-toned Pinot Gris and Roter Traminer macerations, to the tense, finely tuned Muschelkalk Silvaner, they are a wonderful, intriguing set of wines to contemplate. They are quietly assured, compelling expressions of Franken; its unexpectedly long, hot summers and shell-limestone soils.
