A pleasure to receive the new vintage of this Wayward favourite, formerly Enculés, now more innocuously illustrated with some cute fluffy rabbits and informally dubbed 'bunny wine'. Raphaël & Émélie first introduced their wine to us when they visited the shop for one of our most memorable tastings a few years back. This is 100% Gamay from vines planted in 1955 in Theize, 25 minutes north of their winery towards Macon. They took it over in 2017 and have coverted it to organic, this is the third vintage on this parcel. The soils are rich in clay, limestone and the golden stones 'Pierres Dorées' that this part of Beaujolais is famous for. Two weeks of maceration whole bunch then aging in a 27hl barrel from Beaujolais, they chose to blend 2020 & 2021 to give more balance to the wine and it has worked beautifully with wild sun-kissed fruit and a lovely balance of acidity. Perfect in the outsized litre format. The bottles themselves are of note too; they are all reclaimed glass with their own individual, scratched and worn character - perfect to keep as a water carafe once you've finished the wine.

As a child growing up in the Alsace, Raphaël worked in the vineyards of the Meyer family in Nothalten and he has barely left them since. After some years working in Alsace, he left for the Auvergne to work with Vincent Marie of No Control. That’s where he met Emélie, originally from Quebec, who worked with Aurelien Lefort and Patrick Bouju before eventually joining up with Raphaël when he was offered the vines in the south of Beaujolais through a contact of Vincent (he still sells some of the fruit to him.) Enough of the stellar CV’s - now they plough (no pun intended, but yes do use draft horses in the vineyard) their own path. For winemaking generally they macerate whole bunch, dropping the grapes into the cuve and not interfering before pressing, bottling always without any additions, fining or filtering.
