About the Wine

The first time in many years that M&K have elected to make a sparkling wine and what a welcome return it is! The grape is well-suited to the style, particularly with the wonderfully racy acidity that is often to be found coiling around in their wines.

All the good things about a fresher style of Chenin come together here, ripe yellow stone fruits, stony minerals, taut acids and a lick of spice in the finish. Transferred to bottle in its primary fermentation, the bubbles are created as a pet-nat - lively energetic and fun.

A playful counterpoint to their more serious, ageworthy style of still Chenin Blanc.

About Mai & Kenji Hodgson

Mai & Kenji have made a name for themselves for producing rare and expressive wines from 4 hectares of vines they took on in Anjou after a journey that started at a Japanese winery Kenji was interning at, via Vancouver (Kenji's home and where he and Mai met) then to the Loire where they impulsively bought land and set about establishing themselves. Over a relatively short period of time they have begun to produce distinctive wines of great quality, although they themselves admit they are still learning to understand the potential of the land they work on.

Faia 2021

Faia brims with crystalline stone fruits that have a concentrated, mouth-coating quality, acidity is tight and the finish leads into a flourish of ginger spice. Serious Chenin which ably demonstrates that a natural approach can produce age-worthy wines up there with the best in the region. Find out more.

La Grande Pièce 2021

Even at full maturity, as here, Grolleau produces light, low alcohol wines with lots of acidity and an earthy quality. The Gamay adds some bright cherry fruits and stony minerality. Lots of freshness this year in this brilliant, quintessential Loire red. Find out more.

Les Aussigouins 2021

As a broad stroke one could describe Les Aussigouins as a more amped-up sister to Faia - the production is the same, it is the qualities in the raw materials that make it unique. The fruit is opluent and richly textured, with beautiful, long acidity that points to this being a wine built to go the distance. Find out more.
