Classic Sicilian red grape Nero d'Avola, here in wonderfully expressive form and with an invitingly accessible price-tag. If you're not familiar with this staple grape of the Southerly Italian island and enjoy bold Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec then we'd advise you to get acquainted. Here the grapes are grown on the west coast, just outside Marsala, an area blessed with a sun-drenched Mediterranean climate, meaning working the vines without the use of chemicals is the most logical thing to do. The wine is punchy and robust; lots of black cherry, plum and charred tobacco spice which, despite the baking heat, retains a neat line of acidity that brings a bright freshness. Unlike a lot of more overdone d'Avola's from the area this wine sees no oak and is made using no additional sulphites at all.
