Our Next tasting Event:
We’re pleased to welcome another one of the wonderful importers we work with to the shop on Friday 13th March - this time it’ll be the debut of Ancestrel, whose wines from the likes of Il Farneto in Emilia-Romagna and Domaine Vinci in the Roussillon have become firm favourites since their arrival last year
We’ll be opening a selection of wine from their varied portfolio that stretches all the way from France, Italy and Spain to the west coast of the USA, for you to taste on the night. All the growers they are working with are using organic and/or biodynamic farming in the vineyard and working with little or no additions once these grapes arrive in the cellar
The format is the same as ever; drop in any time from 6pm, grab a glass and taste your way through the wines with Rory from Ancestrel on hand to tell you more about the producers, the places and how the wines are made. Once you’ve tried everything you are more than welcome to stick around for a few glasses, or to take a bottle or two home. The tasting is complimentary and everyone is welcome
We hope to see you on the 13th!
Our next event is a dinner at Hern restaurant
on Thursday 27th February
We’re very pleased to announce the first of what we hope to be an ongoing series of collaborations with our neighbours at the wonderful Hern restaurant in Chapel Allerton. On Thursday 27th February we invite you to join us for a night of all things rural French - food from the pages of Pierre Koffmann and Elizabeth David, all paired with small-producer wine from the Loire Valley, the Ardèche and more. Expect boudin noir, braised rabbit in mustard sauce, garlic soup, crusty baguettes and farmhouse cheeses on the menu, as well as a few more surprises, with plenty of wine to wash it all down.
We'll be sticking to Hern's usual set menu format, which is £28 a head for four courses, with the option of an added cheese course for an extra £7. The wine pairing will be in addition at £25 a head. There are no advance tickets - if you'd like to join us simply give Hern a call on 0113 262 5809 to book a table. Spaces are limited so we recommend getting in touch ASAP!
Due to the nature of this event we regret to say that on this occasion we will not be able to accommodate dietary requirements and the menu will contain meat, fish and dairy. It is our intention to have more options available at future dinners, so keep an eye out for the next one if this isn't for you.
We hope you can join us for the beginning of what we hope to be an exciting ongoing collaboration with Hern!
Only Natural IV
A Tasting with Tutto & Gergovie Wines
Friday 29th November
We’re very happy to start the week by announcing the date for the fourth edition of Only Natural - our annual tasting with Tutto & Gergovie Wines! Get Friday 29th November etched into your diaries!
For those who may not have joined us in the past, we started holding Only Natural down at The Reliance as a celebration of wine made by small producers, mainly from Italy and France, who were committed to organic and biodynamic practises in the vineyard and a philosophy of ‘nothing added, nothing removed’ in the cellar. Tutto & Gergovie were the first of the dedicated importers we started to work with to get these expressive and unique wines onto the list and into people’s glasses. Since then the Reliance continues to scatter the list with wines by these growers and we have opened Wayward, a more focussed affair; so this will be the second year we have hosted the tasting up at the shop - also spilling over into the barber shop next door (and quite often the street). When we started Only Natural four years ago it was to highlight what makes these wines stand apart from their more industrially-produced counterparts, since then we feel that so many more people are on board, so it’s a great feeling to have Alex & Raef up to visit us once again to carry on the celebration.
The setup is simple - the tasting runs from 6-10pm. Each importer will be showing six wines from six different growers in their portfolio, one table in the shop side and one table in the barber shop next door. Grab a glass and taste your way through all 12 wines and chat to Alex & Raef about where they come from how they came to be so. Everything will be then available to drink by the glass for you to revisit the wine you’ve enjoyed the most in more detail. As we’re getting dangerously close to the festive season by this point we’ll have all of the wine available in good quantities for you to take away by the bottle - so the perfect opportunity to select those special seasonal bottles in the company of the experts!
We’ll be announcing the wine list in due course, but for now get the date in your diary. There is no ticket needed for the tasting and everyone is welcome. Just show up any time from 6pm to taste, then stick around for drinks and maybe take a bottle or two home. We look forward to you joining us for what is always our biggest night of the year!
Another Cheese & Wine 'To-&-Fro'
with Our Neighbours George & Joseph:
Wednesday 6th November
We’re very pleased to announce another night of cheese and wine tasting with our good friends around the corner, George & Joseph, on Wednesday 6th November!
This time we’ll be focussing on the local wine and cheeses of France, so expect harmonious matches with wines from the Loire valley, Ardèche, Jura and Pyrenees - many of the pairings being with wine from the growers that we are now working with directly like Mikaël Bouges, Le Mazel & L'Alezan.
You can purchase tickets in-store or by following the link to our website at the bottom of the page. They cost £25 a head and include six taster glasses of wine and portions of cheese. The setup is the same as ever - there is no set start time, call by any time from 6pm and then to-and-fro between the two shops to take in your pairings, three at each spot! All wines and cheeses featured will be available to buy to take home on the night with a 5% discount - a great chance to try before you stock up on some potentials for - dare we say it - the upcoming festive season...
These events always sell out pretty sharpish, so don’t sleep on it - get yourself booked in for what is quickly proving to be one of our most popular regular collaborations.

Wednesday 23rd October
Meet the Importer: Otros Vinos
Drop in any time from 6-9pm
Free to taste/wine by the glass/bottles to go
It’s been a little while since our last tasting, so we’re pleased to announce we’re back in full swing and are kicking off the autumn/winter season with a visit from Fernando of Spanish-focussed importer Otros Vinos on October 23rd.
Fernando has long been our go-to guy when it comes to sourcing wines that represent the flipside to the more widely-held idea of Spain; championing smaller producers in less obvious regions who are working with local varietals and traditional methods that are not as familiar to the wider palate. Since last time he visited Fernando has also hopped over the border into deepest Roussillon, to work with producers in locations like Banyuls-sur-Mer too.
On the night we’ll be showing the latest wine from shop regulars like La Senda (Castilla Y León) and La Salada (Catalonia) as well as introducing new growers like Joan Rubió (Catalonia) and Thierry Diaz & Christelle Caillot (Roussillon).
Drop in any time between 6 and 9pm to taste through the wine and find out more about the producers and where they work. All the selections will be available to drink by the glass and by the bottle to take home.
We hope to see you there!
