For many, Le Pergole Torte is one of the finest examples of Sangiovese out there. To be grouped into the category of Chianti (despite no longer releasing the wine under the Classico denomination, preferring instead to be judged on Montevertine's own stellar reputation), Le Pergole Torte is 'a profound soliloquy for Sangiovese. Named after the tiny 2-hectare vineyard from which it comes, Le P.T. has one of the coolest microclimates in the region, giving the wine a shivering energy, a precision to balance the wine’s obvious power. If there is truly tremendous clarity to the wine, an articulation of nuance – dark berry fruit, dried cherry notes, smoke, gravel – make no mistake, Le Pergole Torte is meant to age.'

The ultimate wine from this producer, and one that is only made in exceptional years. The Sangiovese is fermented in concrete and is matured over two years in a mixture of Slavonian and French oak before bottling. This ever there was a wine to lay down it was this one, taking pride of place in any cellar collection as it continues to unfurl over decades to come. Something very special indeed.
