Domaine Gresser is located in the foothills of Mont St Odile, in the Andlau region which is halfway between Strasbourg & Colmar. A strong man with a gentle hand, Remy Gresser is a true gentle giant, passionate about the land, and can trace the family’s history in wine to the 16th century when his ancestor was appointed provost viticulturalist. Remy too is a viticulturalist whose love is with the soil, focusing his winemaking at the terroir level… indeed Remy’s winemaking is as gentle as the man himself, with a focus on natural fermentations in wooden barrels rather than tank, giving that characteristic generosity and softness to the wines. He also works organically and biodynamically and manages to produce wines that combine elegance and richness with deft ability. Andlau is regarded as one of the most complex of the 119 villages in the Alsace with its varied geologies and boasting some of the oldest schist in all of Alsace, at around 460 million years old. Domaine Gresser’s 40 year old vines are planted in this complex geology and specific soil types of clay, gravel and limestone.
This crémant uses only Pinot Blanc, so there is a nice ripeness of stone fruit or honeydew present as well as the sharpness of a crunchy green apple. Lees ageing gives some depth and the bubbles are beautifully finely beaded, the finish persistent. Classic Champagne-style fizz, without the price tag.
