A bit more dark and concentrated than some of the other Sage reds, here bringing thicker-skinned Merlot & Carignan into the mix, but nevertheless shows that trademark lightness of touch that makes his wines so distinctive, as well as so delightfully drinkable. For those who have not yet tried, Sage has certain ways with the extraction of the grapes that results in wines of vivid colour, but gentle, delicate tannic structure. They bristle with life, invigorate, and as a result are keenly hunted down. Limited quantities!
A word on the producer from his UK importer, Gergovie Wines:
For many years at our Fête du Vin in Chassignolles Daniel would come to taste and enjoy the party. He would always bring a bottle of wine he had made from the vineyard he had taken over in Ardèche and this he would quietly taste out to the winemakers in attendance and absorb the feedback. Now his wines are some of the most sought after and for good reason. Daniel has small amounts of Gamay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay and Viognier. Most come from his vineyards in the hills of the northern Rhône and he buys some grapes from his friend Jean Delobre and from other growers further south. Daniel’s takes on these well-known varietals from a seemingly well-known area are extremely expressive.
