Fresh, juicy Tempranillo from some of the highest altitude vines in all of Europe, 1300m up above the clouds at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, not far outside Granada. It’s no surprise that this means a Tempranillo that is a world away from the hot plains of Southern Spain. There are tangy, herbal flavours; little red and black berries and a softening to the edges from a 12 month rest in old barrels post-fermentation. Miguel has been practising organic viticulture up here since the late 70s and is the don of the natural approach, training up many budding younger winemakers who want to work freely outside the rules of their given DO along the way, including his son Lorenzo who he works alongside today. Forget what you think you know about Southern Spanish wine until you have drunk some Barranco Oscuro. Serve chilled alongside some confit squid and as much ajo as you dare.
